My Story

Dennis comes from a large family of twelve people. He lives with his parents and siblings as squatters on private land because they do not have any land of their own. His parents did not have an opportunity to receive an education due to their own impoverished families who also lived as squatters. Dennis’ family is among the many squatters living on this land who are scrambling for the few casual jobs available in the surrounding area. Dennis’ father illegally extracts wood from the government protected forest to make charcoal that he sells for very little profit. Dennis’ mother subsidizes the family’s income by making and selling illegal beer. These illegal and highly dangerous businesses puts Dennis’ life at risk due to the nature of the clientele for the illegal beer and the likelihood of his parents being arrested by the authorities.
