My life before coming to Kaptagat is dark. My mother is mentally ill. When I was 5 years old, she attacked my dad with an axe and left him paralyzed. She then fled. We have not seen her since. My two older brothers left and went to live with distant relatives. I remained at home to take care of my dad. I did not go to school but spent my days begging for food to feed my dad. After 3 years when I was 8 years old, I came to the children’s home with only the clothes on my back that were infested with fleas and lice.
